Westfries Museum

‘Discover the Story of Hoorn’ is the starting point for a group visit to the town. In the Statenpoort, a 17th-century monument in the centre of Hoorn, the Westfries Museum combines a short multimedia show with a walk through historic Hoorn.

Multimedia show in the Statenpoort

The programme begins with a multimedia show lasting around 15 minutes. The show brings the history of Hoorn to life on the interior walls of the 17th-century Statenpoort.

In a short space of time, your group will be introduced to key moments in the city’s history. Topics such as the Battle of the Zuiderzee, journeys of discovery, the nutmeg monopoly and black servants are covered. The show illustrates how Hoorn’s local history is linked to trade, power and global connections.

The show is also available in English and German.

Walk through Hoorn

After the show, your group can explore the city on a guided walking tour. During this walk, a guide will take the group past Hoorn’s monuments and sites that tie in with the stories from the multimedia show. For groups, this is a natural way to delve deeper into Hoorn’s history. The walk provides context for the town and makes the programme an ideal starting point for a visit to Hoorn.

In addition, ‘podwalks’ are available for visitors who wish to explore the town independently. There are two routes: a town route lasting approximately 1 hour and a harbour route lasting approximately 1.5 hours. The podwalks are available in Dutch, English and German and can be booked separately from the show. Combining with other activities ‘Discover the Story of Hoorn’ is ideal as the starting point for a group programme in the city. The programme first provides your group with context on the history of Hoorn. The visit can then be extended with a guided city walk, a visit to the Steam tram or another heritage site in the region.

Planning a visit

The multimedia show lasts approximately 15 minutes. Combined with a city walk or podwalk, the programme takes around 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on the chosen route.

The venue at the Statenpoort is open Tuesday to Sunday from 12.00 to 17.00. The Statenpoort is wheelchair accessible.
