War Museum Medemblik

At the Medemblik War Museum, the history of the Second World War comes to life. Your group will hear stories about daily life during the occupation, the choices made in wartime, and the road to liberation.

Welcome with a ‘Liberation’ cake

The visit begins with coffee or tea and a ‘Liberation’ cake. This cake is made according to a family recipe dating from the Second World War. During the welcome, your group will hear the story behind this tradition.

This way, the visit begins with a personal story. It immediately provides context for the topics covered later in the museum.

A walk through the 1940s

Following the welcome, there is a guided tour lasting approximately 60 minutes through the exhibitions ‘Choices in Almersdorp’ and ‘Road to Freedom’. Accompanied by a guide, your group will walk through a covered village from the 1940s. In this setting, you will experience what daily life was like for civilians during the occupation. The tour illustrates the choices people were faced with.

Military history is also covered. In the military exhibition, you’ll learn about well-known and lesser-known operations that contributed to the liberation, such as the Red Ball Express transport operation. After the guided tour, there’s time to explore the museum further at your own pace.

Planning a visit

A full programme lasts on average 2 to 3 hours. This includes a welcome, a guided tour and, if required, lunch. The exact details can be tailored to the group’s schedule and preferences.

The Medemblik War Museum is equipped to accommodate group visits and coach parties. Coaches can park free of charge at the museum.

Additional activities

The visit can be enhanced with additional activities. These might include a ride in historic liberation lorries, traditional Dutch games or a film screening in a 1940s-style cinema. This allows you to tailor the programme to the target group, the time available and the desired structure of the day.
